The Ugly Duchess from Royal Doulton (D6599) is in excellent condition with no damage ever. Issued in 1965 to 1973 when discontinued. The Ugly Duchess was a character of the Lewis Carroll's children's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Although she is smiling here, she is introduced in the book where she is vigorously tossing a baby up and down upon her knees. Later The Duchess meets Alice again while playing "flamingo" croquet with hedgehogs as balls. She is wearing a headdress common to the time. True to her liken of croquet, her handle is a flamingo standing on a mallet. The character jug was modeled by Max Henk who referred to an illustration of her painted by Sir John Tenniel. He in turn used a painting of a fourteenth century Duchess Margaretha Maultasch [the ugliest woman in history]. She is marked D6599 and is in Mint condition with no chips or crackling. She stands approximately 6 3/4" tall. This is a very scarce piece, hard to come by! "Click on" (View Posters Other Ads)
