What a charming plate! The old lighthouse keeper watches pensively while his young daughter mends his worn woolen coat. Is this the same tender child who once tugged with such urgency at his trouser leg, who pleaded for that special doll at Christmas, and drifted off to sleep so readily in the secure protection of her father’s arms? The rush of memories fades away as quickly as it began. And in this self-assured little girl stitching with such care and concentration, he suddenly recognizes the spirit of a grown woman – the woman she must soon become.
The third plate in The Rockwell Heritage Collection from Edwin M. Knowles, “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter” is Norman Rockwell’s moving depiction of a bittersweet moment in the life of a father. A work which originally appeared on the cover of Literary Digest in 1923, it is a classic example of the paintings from his formative “Victorian” period – the period which presages the sentimentality and emotion of his later works.
This stunning collector’s plate measures 8 ½” in diameter, is numbered 07,292 K, and is the 3rd in the Rockwell Heritage Collection. This plate was made in a limited edition permanently closed in 1979 by Knowles and certified as a “True Rockwell Classic” by The Rockwell Society of America. This rare Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter commemorative plate is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks, and comes with the original certificate of authenticity, pamphlet, and box.
