I found this gold letter seal matrix last year at an old pioneer home site in the North Durham Region with my metal detector. Originally, there either would have been a carved cypher or an initial made of stone or brass attached to the bottom, but now long gone. It has quite a lot of corrosion on it, but it displays beautifully. There is a slight ‘push’ on one side of the piece, likely from being hit by a plow blade or disk, as I found this in a farm field. I haven’t a clue as to the karat weight of the gold, but I would think it’s somewhere between 9 – 14 K. Weight: 1/10 of an oz?
