When finding these things from time to time, one often wonders where the term sad iron originated. Apparently, the word sad in sad iron is an old English word for solid or heavy. In the ironing world this is opposed to a flat iron or a box iron.

Here are three sad irons with one carrying an adaptable wood and metal handle that is spring fitted to the iron. The inscription on metal base of the handle reads THE UNIVERSAL HANDLE Pat Aug 1912.

One iron is cast with the name "Taylor-Forbes, Guelph, Canada" while the others are labelled “J.B. Lewis, Hamilton, Ont.” One is a No 3 and the others are No 2’s. The number designations dealt with the weight of the iron and thus its heat holding capacity.
These are offered as found and need some clean up to remove some accumulated rust. They look like they might still work and would make good paper weights for those of us that still use paper for anything other than the toilet.
