    Description

Painting signed in lower right hand corner by “Shurly” with a faded date of “1955” appearing beneath the signature. Dimensions of frame: 23 1/4 inches x 19 1/8 inches. Dimensions of image: 19 1/2 inches x 15 1/2 inches. The painting is in very good condition. Please carefully review all photos for condition of painting and noted details on the reverse side. About the artist: According to our research, Elizabeth Cutler Shurly (1898-1976) was born Elizabeth Cutler Irwin, In Galt, Ontario, daughter of Joseph Irwin, a private banker, and Nellie Cutler. She married Flint Gilholm Shurly, (1902-1980) in 1929. He was an an accountant, who became an insurance executive. They lived in Detroit and England before settling in Rosedale, Toronto. Shurly travelled to Newfound in Autumn, 1954,, and completed this painting in 1955 as indicated on the reverse side, see photo showing detailed notation of “Newfoundland Autumn 1954” and artist name, and date 1955. This is an important piece of art as there is very little Newfoundland art in this time period. According to a Newfoundlander acquaintance of mine, money was too scarce to buy art supplies. Artistic efforts went into more practical forms, such as knitting and quilting. However during this time period, the province of Newfoundland was beginning to encourage tourism; and painting was considered an acceptable reason for women to travel. This item ships from Owen Sound, Ontario. Shipping would be an added cost, with an estimated cost to Newfoundland via Canada Post of approx. $50. This could vary dependent on the the gas surcharge fee at a particular point in time. Any questions, please ask, as I aim to please.
