Marlene Jofriet was born and educated in the UK. She studied architecture at the College of Art and Architecture in Canterbury, now Kent University.
She has practiced architecture both in Canada and the UK and is now retired from that profession. In addition to being a full-time artist, she has conducted numerous watercolour workshops and classes for various institutions in North America, the UK and the Caribbean.
Marlene is past Director of both the Southampton Art School and the Elora Summer Art School. She now paints full time at her home studio. Rural and urban landscapes are the main source of her inspirations; she collects the information gathered outdoors in her sketchbooks to compose works in acrylic.
Marlene's work hangs in collections in Canada, the UK, the USA and in New Zealand. Several paintings adorn the walls of the University of Guelph including a large mural "Reaching" in the School of Engineering, University of Guelph. She also has work hanging in the Guelph Chamber of Commerce and Guelph City Hall.
She became a listed Canadian artist in 1954 and is represented by:
National Gallery of Canada - Library and Archives / Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography
Art Gallery of Ontario - Edward P. Taylor Research Library and Archives
Her main subjects are paintings of rural and urban landscapes; shapes and forms appear out of her landscapes, uncluttered and colourful, capturing the essence of the subject.
Here the back shed looks as imposing as a cathedral and reverently painted as if it was a church.
