A personal painting about the beauty and serenity of Jeannie Pallister's memories, Christmas's past perhaps and the will to carry on. It's an ambitious challenge to put that kind of emotion in one small painting but the artist, from Kelowna, British Columbia, has done a fine job of giving us some details.
For such a compact image I can see three separate parts and joining them all together makes a perfect memory.
If you cover the two pine trees near the center of the painting with your hand what emerges is a simply beautiful row of barns and a house sheltered by the hills and the forests underneath. It's worthy of any number of listed artists we had in Canada back in the 1980's. This image is frozen in time.
Secondly, there's a huge difference with the color and detail between the upper and the lower half of the painting. For me, that's where the separation and loneliness creeps in. It's her signature at the bottom of the painting, quite far away from the lovely homestead in the valley.
And thirdly, there's the wintry Christmas pine trees painted quite vigorously as compared with how she painted the buildings behind, and the title 'Winter Peace' completes her thought.
I'm sure there are better stories that may apply here but I'm thrilled to have found such an interesting little painting.
