Jack Reid, 1925 - 2009, born in Toronto, Ontario, a graphic artist who turned to full-time painting in 1970. Self-taught in water colours he is known for his rural and wilderness scenes. He bears comparison to artists like Andrew Wyeth and even earlier, Fritz Thaulow hearkening back to the original Impressionists. (Thaulow was the master of natural scenes with slow moving water in the late 1800's alongside Monet.)
There is something distinctly Canadian in his work. His work looks deep into the landscape. Aside from some panoramic scenes many of his greatest works are these astonishing captured details of snow on a fence, or a tree or on a river. These are scenes other artists might pass by but it's his astonishing technique that elevates this into a truly fine art. He is a listed Canadian artist and was a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colours.
His medium was almost exclusively watercolors and he created wonderful DVD's revealing how his art was created.
This watercolor print is labelled by the artist as "Winter Sentry", a rugged sentinel guarding what lies beyond, into the forest.
With only 375 prints made this is a rare piece. In perfect condition, ready to hang.
