"Nowhere is the delicate balance of technique and artistry more evident than in the intricate work of Peter and Traudl Markgraf. Working together in the basement of their Sunshine Coast (British Columbia) home they coaxed layers of light and shadow out of nylon screens and onto paper to get the soft, romantic effects which characterized their work.
In their over 30 years of printmaking the Markgraf's not only mastered printmaking techniques, they pioneered them. Essential to their success was their commitment to working together. From beginning to end, there was no division of labor.
Their work has earned them an international reputation and an ever expanding audience who seek to share their vision."
Peter and Traudl Markgraf traveled across Canada and throughout North America in the 70's and 80's and were inspired by the landscapes they saw.
Their prints were all made by hand in small quantities, usually around 100, in their studio on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada and most of the editions sold out within days of being presented in Vancouver. Their work pre-dates the later mass-production of "original signed prints" when thousands of copies were mechanically produced and signed by artists who had little to do with their creation.
The Markgraf's are listed Canadian artists and their works are housed in many government galleries throughout Canada, including the Canadian National Gallery.
This print is titled 'Inlet' and it gives us another of their haunting scenes out of Canada's west coast.
Original vintage frame and lithograph are in good condition, ready to hang.
