The most common questions we are asked by customers are as follows;
1) Why do I have a head gasket problem?
The number one reason for head gasket failure is engine overheating,caused by a malfunction of a cooling system part.
2) How can I tell if my head gasket is leaking?
Common symptoms are a poorly running engine,loss of antifreeze, white smoke coming from the exhaust,coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant,excessive pressure in the cooling system or the heater is blowing cold air.
3)Do you do any testing that can confirm it is a leaking head gasket.
Yes we do a Block Test,which detects exaust gas in the cooling system. This is for internal head gasket leaks. If it is an external leak, we can pressure test the system,to determine where the leak is coming from.
4)What is Thermalweld?
It is a heat activated graphite ceramic chemical that permanently seals blown head gaskets,as well as warped and cracked heads.
5)How does your procedure work?
First the cooling system is flushed with plain water until all the coolant has been removed. The Thermalweld is added to the cooling system and run at high idle for 5-10 minutes. The head gasket is now sealed. The vehicle is then driven for a week of normal driving.After this, the Thermalweld and water are flushed out and new coolant is put back in.
6) Is Thermalweld the same as stop leak that I can buy at the parts store?
No most stop leak products are added to the coolant and coat the entire cooling system. Most of the time they either don't work or are very temporary. Half the vehicles we are called to fix,have some type of stop leak product that has been added to the cooling system.
Thermalweld is heat activated at high temperatures and will only form a seal between the head and block. It will not plug up or damage any part of the cooling system.
7) Are some vehicles to far gone for the Thermalweld to fix?
Sometimes if the vehicle has been severely overheated and major damage has been done to the engine, it may be unfixable.
We can normally tell you over the phone if it is fixable.
