Only 4088 units of the Impala Indy SS will be built, with about 200 of them coming to Canada with the sticker price of $36,765. Indeed, they're already on sale at selected Chevrolet stores across the country.

The Indy SS package is based on the new-for-2004 Impala SS sedan (MSRP $36,650), which has at its heart GM's 3800 Series II supercharged V-6, delivering 240 hp at 5200 rpm and 280 lb-.ft. of torque at 3600 rpm. This isn't a spiky torque point either, since the curve is consistently high over a broad operating range, which should provide better off-the-line acceleration and ample power for highway merging and passing.

Unique to the Impala Indy SS are 17-inch chrome diamond-cut aluminum wheels, monotone cross-lace grille with "gold" Chevy bowtie emblem and a rear spoiler.

To make the connection to the famous Speedway obvious, they've installed a copy of the famous "winged wheel" on the front fenders and instrument panel, as well as embroidered into the front seat head restraints and floor mats.

Like the standard Impala SS, the Indy SS is available only in a monochromatic black exterior, complemented by grey leather seating surfaces inside.

From Auto week There are subtle signs this Impala SS celebrates Chevy's history with the famed oval speedway. There are IMS logos stitched in the headrests and floormats and a tiny IMS decal on the lower half of the fenders. Then there are the gold bow tie and 17-inch chrome wheels. Other than the two "limited edition" reminders on the dash, it's all regular Impala. However, that doesn't mean Chevy fans won't care.

During my test drive a father-and-son duo hovered around me like vultures following a wounded animal. They dropped behind, ran up front, then slowed down beside me as Dad pointed out the differences to his son. It was an automotive Kodak moment and this went on for more than five minutes.

Admirers aside, the supercharged engine has good get-up-and-go. The handling, not exactly sporty, leans more on the softer end of things, and for my 300-plus-mile drive to the 500 in Indianapolis, that was just fine. The Impala is a comfortable long-distance cruiser and leaps past highway stragglers with ease. The trunk is cavernous, the interior likewise, and the audio system really kicks with clear notes and a strong dose of bass. Add in XM Satellite radio (which I'm really starting to like) and there is always something to keep you entertained.

Chevy is building only 4088 Indy SS Impalas to guarantee exclusivity to its loyal customers. To most people this is just an Impala with badges and it won't generate much excitement. But if that enthusiastic father and son is any indication, those who want this car will need little convincing to sign on the dotted line.
