STREET LATIN DANCE CLASS
Street Latin describes a variety of Latin club dances and includes Salsa, Bachata and Merengue.
Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in New York with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Puerto Rico, Cuba and Colombia. The movements of salsa have its origins in Cha-cha-cha, Mambo and other dance forms. The dance; Along with the salsa music, is energetic and sexy. Probably the most popular Latin dance danced in night clubs. This is a fun partner dance characterized with spins and turns for both the leader and follower incorporating an interesting variety of dynamic moves and combinations.
Authentic Merengue is one of the simplest Latin dances to learn and is considered the national dance of the Dominican Republic. The beat is clear, the rhythm is constant, and the style is relaxed and unrushed with a regular step action where turns and moves can be as simple or as complex as desired and can be executed with as many steps as the partners choose.
Bachata is also a dance from the Dominican Republic and both the music and the dance have been influenced by many of the other Latin dances including Salsa and Merengue. Bachata is typically a slower dance than Salsa and its sensual, smooth style is rapidly increasing in popularity in the dance clubs. It’s a great dance to catch your breath after a fast Salsa and it’s very enjoyable to dance with it’s simple travelling side step basic.
In the class you will learn how to dance in sync with a partner, how to lead/follow, the basic footwork, timing and styling of Salsa, Bachata and Merengue; as well as a variety of popular moves and sequences. You don’t need any dance experience or a partner to take part in this beginners’ course which will teach you the fundamentals you will need to enjoy these popular dances.
Classes are only $99. for 10 weeks of lessons.

Our lead instructor Gabia Ferguson has owned a dance school for a number of years dedicated to various social dance styles such as Street Latin, Rock and Roll, West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop. These fun and relaxed partner dances, suited to all ages, are a great way to exercise and socialize and are becoming increasingly popular as a result of reality TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance.
Gabia gained experience with everything from Lithuanian Folk Dancing to Ballroom and Latin dance at a young age, but when introduced to a Rock & Roll and Swing class; She fell in love with the freedom and creativity of these fun dances, not to mention the music and fashions of this era. She went on to win many competitions both as an amateur and professional in these dance styles and passed on her passion to others when she commenced teaching. Gabia drew the dance community together by organizing social dance events, workshops and competitions which brought people from all around the country. A highlight of her dancing life was being chosen to dance in the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games.
These classes are only $99 for 10 lessons.
