Imagine you are standing with a group of hikers at the edge of a beautiful canyon. You can see the trail leading down from where you stand. You can see a bridge crossing a river at the bottom. You can see the path leading up the other side. Finally, you can see the final destination. You are excited to embark on this journey, you feel confident that you can do it and the steps you must take seem quite clear from this high vantage point. You know it will be difficult, but everyone in the group is confident they can complete this trek.
But on the descent, something happens. Your perceptions change. Your view of the finish is blocked by trees and rocks. You can only truly see a short stretch of trail, only a few steps ahead. You know it’s there, but you can’t see it anymore. Trail markers are few and far between. You have to make some decisions out of intuition alone. A few members of your group decide to turn back just to be safe. The trail is rough and there are many risks. It may be hotter than you realized with the afternoon sun beating down on you. You consider turning back to where you started, you’ve been there before. It’s safe and familiar. But, you remember the goal and push on.
Finally, you find the bridge and cross the river. This milestone gives you a boost of energy knowing that you have passed the halfway point. However, now the trail is going uphill. It is fraught with dangers like loose rocks and steep climbs. You may consider turning back once again as this seems too hard.
You know you are probably heading the right way, but you still can’t see the finish. Most of your group has turned back by now because it was too hard. But there is something inside of you that keeps you going and finally, you reach the other side. Be proud. Most of your group didn’t make it. In fact, very few people ever complete this journey.
