Providing Weather Observing Services and Aerological Services to Nav Canada and Environment Canada for 24 years and currently operate 7 locations across Canada.

Training:

6 week training course Cornwall, Ont (Mon-Fri 8 hrs a day). Course is quite involved there is a lot of material covered requiring memorization, study ect, basic math (add, subtract, divide, multiply with calculator including positive and negative numbers)

No experience required. Only requires grade 12 diploma to attend but better if some post secondary unless you did good in high school.

Applicants must pass course to get job (job requires Nav Canada certification that person has successfully completed training.).

3 written tests spread throughout course and overall average must be at least 75 to pass.

We pay all costs to attend training including airfare to Ottawa (Nav Canada provide transfer to Cornwall) or gas if driving.

No wages paid on course.

We do pay 400.00 a week training allowance not subject to deductions.

We pay for trainees to stay at Nav Canada training center (meals included). Site is called Dev Center and web site available on line.

Nature of Employment (looking for both full time or part time staff)

Station Operates 24 hrs per day shifts are either 0730AM to 0730PM or 0730 PM to 0730AM 84 hrs biweekly.

The position offers the ability to remain in long term stable employment and some staff have been with us for over 15 years in fulltime employment.

Observer Current Weather Conditions to a MANOBS standard.

Involves going outside at least once an hour (more often if active weather is occurring an assessing (by use of eye sight )

Current Visibility ie 1/8 mile, 1 mile, 3 miles , 40 miles?

Current Sky Condition ie overcast broken scattered of few , types of clouds, height of different cloud layers

Current Present Weather ie rain, rain showers, snow snow showers ,fog, haze, hail ect?

Transmit information inside on computer and confirming OBS is sent and received correctly.

The job is very low stress and observers work alone and often have a lot of time on their hands (OBS done on the hour only unless significant weather and it only takes a few minutes to perform a weather observation). As long as staff are maintaining a continuous weather watch they can engage in other activities between observations ie read , watch tv, use internet ect (staff cannot of course sleep or leave the station between observations ie leave immediate airport property) and in fact during periods of no significant weather in fact need some means to keep busy or active.

Weather Observing Introduction Observing stations around the world continually observe various weather elements. Specifically Prevailing Visibility, Sky Condition and Current Weather ie (rain? snow? ice pellets? freezing rain drizzle? Fog? mist? nothing currently?) In addition while the equipment does the Current Temperature Dew Point wind direction and wind speed and barometric pressure and altimeter calculation observers are trained on course how also to perform these items with out the equipment in the event of an outage.

These observations, along with specific measurements of atmospheric conditions, are recorded each hour, 24 However, with adverse weather, it is often necessary to record conditions more frequently as up-to-the-minute data is vital to areas such as aviation. These detailed weather observations, taken at frequent intervals, form the We must be able to accurately describe existing conditions before forecasters can hope to make reasonable predictions.
