Let’s talk about our girl LuLu. LuLu has not had an easy life and that is reflected in how she reacts and interacts with the world around her. LuLu was used in a puppymill and repeatedly bred until she was sold to a man who housed her in a garage where she was again used for breeding purposes. The scars on her muzzle speak to the treatment she received at the hands of her “owner”. There were years in LuLu’s life where there were no kindness, no love and, literally, no sun or grass or anything worth living for. We don’t mention these things to induce pity for our LuLu! We want people to understand that LuLu needs a very, very special home who will take into account her past BUT will adhere to the “from here on out, it’s all going to be nothing but love” philosophy.

LuLu is being fostered in the Ancaster area and will only be adopted to a family who is willing to participate in a longer than normal adoption process. This will include driving to LuLu’s foster home in Ancaster to meet and visit with her several times over period of a few months (and have her come visit you in your home too during that time). Please keep reading to understand why this will be necessary.

LuLu has been in rescue with Collie Rescue Network for over two years now. Twice families have said they understand LuLu’s needs and twice LuLu has been adopted.....and twice LuLu has been returned to rescue. Not because she is aggressive or destructive or untrained or doing anything “bad” at all. She is returned because she doesn’t live up to the expectations of what they would like her to be, instead of what LuLu is (and what LuLu needs). What LuLu needs is a very special human who will understand it might take her a month or two or even three to come back out of her shell once she moves homes. She needs a person who will stand up for her, who will wait for her, be patient and kind and quiet with her. LuLu IS worth the wait. She IS worth getting to know – to actually know her, and not what you want her to be. She won’t go for walkies at first, she won’t even want to look at you at first. She will want to be in a safe place (her crate, or beside a chair or somewhere she feels safe to observe what’s happening without being made to interact just yet). Give her space, give her time, give her the respect of letting her come to you at her own pace. She IS worth the wait. Because once LuLu knows you are safe and can be trusted........

LuLu is a sweet, affectionate girl who loves attention. She is a low-maintenance girl who is happy to just lay beside your chair and keep you company. She would love to be the much loved companion of a retired couple or single person who lives a quiet lifestyle in a rural or quiet suburban type setting. Any quiet, low-key home setting will suit her just fine. If you like to garden or putter around the house and need a little supervision, well, LuLu is your girl! Once LuLu knows she’s safe, being with her humans is where she is happiest.

She is now approximately 10 years old and is still in good health. She needs to be an only dog. Her time in the puppymill seems to have left an impression on her and she doesn’t totally trust other dogs. Some she likes, some she doesn’t and that decision is really LuLu’s alone. She will be happiest as an only dog, hanging out at home with her family. A cat free home would be best for her too, please. Again, it seems to be a random like or not-like thing but in the long run, she will be happier to be the only animal in her new family. She can (and deserves) to soak up all the love and attention that way.

LuLu used to only potty in a fully-fenced yard and was afraid of leash walks. She has come a long, long way since she first arrived in rescue and once she is comfortable with her people, LuLu quiet enjoys her walks and will potty on-leash when told “go pee”. She would still need a fenced yard so that, in the beginning, she can easily potty without stress. She will enjoy, even after she settles in, hanging out in the yard with you and lounging in the sun and grass.

When she first arrives in her furever home, LuLu will use her crate as her safe place. She will slowly emerge though and will settle in with her family for evening TV time and so on, however, when needed, she is happy and willing to go back to her crate, especially if you give her a treat filled Kong to play with in there!

LuLu likes people and meets house visitors with a happy tail wag. People like to tell her how pretty she is and she likes to tell them that Yes, yes she IS a pretty girl! LuLu has a lipid deposit in one eye, making it look cloudy but she can still see and it’s not something that needs to be fixed or treated in any way.

More than anything else, LuLu needs a place where she will be loved and cherished for the sweet, wonderful and very, very brave girl that she is. LuLu has come a long way in her lifetime and she deserves a home who will love this girl and accept her quirks (because, to be honest, she will happily accept yours!). She needs to be a true family member who is given the time (and it might be a lot of time that is needed!) to settle in and trust you. She is worth that wait, we promise!

Things you should know about buying or adopting a pet

While pet sellers can be reputable individuals or breeders who treat their animals well, the ease of selling pets over the Internet also makes it attractive to careless, irresponsible breeders and scammers. To protect yourself, you must be careful and believe only what you see and not what you are told. It is highly recommended to arrange for an inspection of the home where the pets are bred. This allows you to check that the mother and other animals are living in suitable conditions, being well cared for, and are in good health.

Remember that the Kijiji Pets section is NOT intended to facilitate uncontrolled breeding, irresponsible commercial pet trading, trade of dogs or any other animal for the purpose of fighting or stud services. Any ads that are suspected of promoting this kind of activity or reported to us will be removed. Users are responsible for adhering to the applicable conditions in relation to adopting, buying, selling or listing of an ad on Kijiji.

Kijiji encourages, where possible, the adoption of pets and encourages all pet owners to have their animals spayed or neutered as well as microchipped.

When looking for a pet, it is important to meet the breeder or seller and examine the pet before agreeing to anything. Since Kijiji is local to your community, this should be easy to arrange. Never adopt/buy a pet from someone who is unwilling to let you see how and where the animal is living!
