Perform entry level car repairs, changes, improvements and conversions to car parts and assemblies such as underframe, trucks, insulation jackets, tanks and bodies of railroad cars. Quality of work performed must meet AAR, FRA, GATX and customer guidelines. Provide assistance while learning the trade of Car Repairman. Tasks include entry level car repairs such as: remove, replace, straighten, renew or repair various car parts such as couplers, gears, safety appliances, insulation, running boards, etc. as required to achieve proper repairs. Car repairer’s are also called upon to perform rail car cleaning, blasting and yard maintenance.
Must be able to operate a lift truck and perform minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment used.
Maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner. Comply with the established safety policies, support-continuing awareness for safety, and when possible recommend specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.
Tools and equipment used on the job include: Grinders, welders, burning equipment and attachments, pneumatic tools, jacks, torch, measuring devices, hydro-blaster, lifting equipment (forklift, crane, gear table, etc) and assorted hand tools and gauges.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as work instructions, work orders and the AAR Field Manual.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Perform semi-routine jobs where judgment is required to obtain results. Ability to make changes in routine or sequence on repetitive job involving selection, positioning and recognition of obvious defects. Perform manual tasks such as positioning, assembling, etc., at a steady pace where accuracy and dexterity of a high degree are required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee uses moderate to heavy physical exertion. Use of a variety of medium-sized hand tools for performing work. Climbs and works from ladders.
