The bell is smaller and concave, and is designed to capture low-frequency sounds such as heart murmurs. It is also used for detecting some bowel sounds and bruits. The diaphragm is larger and flat, and is optimized for high-frequency sounds such as breath, bowel, and normal heart sounds. It is also used for examining the heart.
