Fossil Shell Flour is composed of the natural fossilized remains of diatoms - a type of hard-shelled algae. This freshwater ground Diatomaceous Earth (DE) contains 99.5% amorphous silica and less than ½ % crystalline silica. It has the consistency of chalky powder and is used as a natural insecticide and de-wormer.
It is approved for use in agriculture as an inert carrier, or anti-caking agent in feeds.
Health Benefits for Humans – Mother Nature’s Cleanse and Detox
Food-Grade DE can be taken daily to help eliminate intestinal parasites, worms and keep bowels clean.
As it passes through the stomach and digestive tract it attracts and absorbs bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticide and drug residues, e-coli and heavy metals and passes them out of the body. Symptoms associated with them – such as fatigue, unclear thinking, headaches, endocrine and hormonal balances, bloating, irritable bowel, constipation, skin disorders, etc. subside or are relieved altogether.
It has 14 trace minerals and is a natural source of silica, necessary for calcium absorption. Silica has many healing properties for healthy hair, skin and nails. It builds collagen and elastin, which aid in preventing wrinkles and is important in all connective tissue; including cartilage, tendons, ligaments and vascular lining. It aids in strengthening the body’s musculo-skeletal system to prevent, or speed the healing of, fractures.
Adults – 1 heaping tsp in a cup of water, juice, smoothie or mixed in food. Start with 1 heaping tsp daily for a week and gradually work your way up to 1 – 3 heaping TBSP. per day.
Children – 1/2 tsp to 1 level tsp per day.
As an external insecticide, it works as a mechanical killer on the small exoskeletons of insects by clinging to the bodies of insects as they walk or crawl over it. The tiny diatom particles then cut the waxy coating of insects, so they eventually dry out and die of dehydration between 48 hours and 11 days, depending on exposure and type of insect. Food-grade diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled around your vegetable patch or rubbed into your dog’s fur.
For indoor use, lightly sprinkle a thin layer in areas where insects are found or may hide, to control ants, fleas, ticks, aphids, silverfish, cockroaches, bedbugs* (see below), spiders, carpet beetles, earwigs, slugs, snails and other crawling insects. Leave in place until you no longer see signs of insects (up to 2 weeks) and then vacuum. Reapply insect dust to areas of infestation if you see continued signs of insects. Vacuuming thoroughly is essential.
You may wish to put a small amount (tsp) of DE into your vacuum bag prior to vacuuming. Throw bag/contents outside your home immediately after. If using a receptacle canister that holds debris, rinse with soapy water after.
If you're not sure you have fleas, plug in a night light and place a pan of soapy water below it (or any lamp light at night above the dish of soapy water). The fleas will jump for the light and fall into the water where the soap kills them.
For outdoor use, lightly coat a thin layer where other insects are found, such as patios, windows, door frames, foundations, along ant trails, outdoor pipes and drains. Reapply after any medium to heavy rains.
Suggested Application Method:
A new soft-bristled wide paintbrush dipped and coated in the DE and then shaken/tapped/sprinkled over an area will more easily provide a consistent thin coverage layer. (See image of dusting brush idea)
If applied too heavily, some insects will not walk through it, which they must to become cut and dehydrated. This application method avoids creating clouds of fine dust that could be breathed in and affect mucous membranes. Wear a dusk mask for heavier/larger area applications and *mist* the air *lightly* with water to keep any dust down, should that occur.
Remember that DE must be dry to work properly, so avoid any dampness in areas of application, or reapply when the area is again dry.
Flea control for dogs:
For easy dispensing, place DE into a baby talc powder container with holes for sprinkling, or a spice container with medium-large holes (see image of make-shift flea shaker). Or rub small amounts into the fur in overlapping sections to kill fleas. Or try sprinkling the DE on a towel that you wrap them in and gently rub over their fur being careful not to raise dust in the surrouning air. I suggest you try this first on a stuffed toy to practice. Avoid contact with animal's eyes and nose.
Do not use for cats as they do not sit still and this will create a fine dust that they (or you) could breathe in. The towel method (above) may work for some cats. You may wish to try a dry shampoo instead. The homemade versions consist of baking soda, cornstarch, oatmeal (?) or cornmeal brushed into the fur and left for 5 minutes and then brushed/combed out (google for further info). Some versions are lightly warmed in a low temperature oven before application.
Internal Parasite Control and Mineralization for Animals :
The suggested mixing rate in animal food is at the rate of 2% of the dry weight of the food, or in an amount not to exceed 2% of the total diet. Feeding at 2% of grain ration can take care of both de-worming and mineralization.
Kittens 1/2; tsp. Cats 1/2 - 1 tsp. in food
Puppies 1/2 tsp – 1 tsp. Dogs <50 lbs 2 tsp, at 50 lbs 1 Tbsp, >100 lbs 2 Tbsp. in food
Beef/Dairy Cattle/Bison: 2% of total weight of dry ration
Calf: 4 grams in morning milk per calf
Horses: 2% in daily ration (1/2 - 1 cup)
Chickens: Up to 5% in feed
Hogs: 2% of weight in feed ration
Sheep/Goats: Up to 2% in ground grains

"Hi Rhonda! Just to update you . . . It's been about 3 weeks since I used the Diatomaceous Earth in my front room for the winged ant issue and in my kitchen cupboard and along the counter for a regular ant problem and I thought you would like to know that I haven't seen an ant of any kind in about 2 weeks!!!" IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING WITH BEDBUGS . . .
Email me and I will send you the followup information, beginning with:
What you need:
• Margarine containers (or similar)
• Vaseline or hair gel
• Blue Dawn dish soap (only the blue one)
• 90-99% USP Rubbing Isopropyl Alcohol (Walmart or other pharmacy)
• Spray Bottles that can do a stream or a wide spray
• Diatomaceous Earth - DE (5 - 10 lbs will do a whole house)
• Allerease Bedbug Mattress/Boxspring AND Pillow Covers (Walmart approx $50 & $10 depending on size)
• Large wide soft bristled paint brush for dipping into DE to sprinkle coverage (Dollarama)
• Dust mask (Dollarama)
1. Make a mixture of approximately 40 percent water, 40 percent rubbing alcohol (>90% USP strength) and 20 percent Blue Dawn dish soap. Mix into spray bottle. This mixture kills them on contact, but will not reach hidden ones, which is why we also use the DE to force them to walk or crawl over it. By coming into contact they will dehydrate and die within 2 weeks (studies have shown 100% kill rate in 11 days). etc. . . . *more steps in info sheet.
*Ask me to send you the BedBug and DE and Dawn info sheet on how to handle the situation further.
