Job Summary:

The Child & Adolescent Mental Health Program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is recruiting for a newly graduated Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse for an entry level position. This is a regular full-time position pursuant to Transitional Graduate Nurse Recruitment Program (TGNRP) provisions and is open to those who have or will graduate with a Baccalaureate of Nursing within the 12 months prior to commencement of the TGNRP and who have not already obtained a regular full-time or regular part-time position with AHS. Applicants must be eligible for registration (including temporary permit) with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) and/or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Current BCLS-HCP level is required. This program is intended for a new (within the past year) nursing graduate and is not open to individuals with previous nursing experience who have completed programs such as the Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program or the nursing refresher program following an absence of five years or more or a more advanced nursing degree.

Reporting to the Unit Manger, the Transitional Graduate Nurse (TGN) shall work under the guidance of a clinical guide (i.e. RN, RPN, Clinical Educator or Clinical Supervisor) as a member of the health care team, collaborating on the delivery of holistic, comprehensive care to meet the needs of individuals, families and/or communities within level of competency. The TGN is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating patient care through the development of an Integrated Plan of Care (IPoC). Duties include crisis intervention and de-escalation, assessment, medication administration, diagnostic and treatment based nursing care to mentally ill children and teens, aged 6-18 years. Following program policies and procedures, the nurse will document findings and outcomes. The RN/RPN will develop effective and engaging relationships with other mental health service providers within AHS, families, caregivers and community partners.

This position is supernumerary in nature until such time as the TGN is determined to be ready to independently assume the full scope of RN or RPN practice or a maximum duration of 9 months. The TGN will be required to apply for available vacancy positions of no less than .5 FTE and may work as relief once they are determined to be ready to practice independently.

Hours of work may be 7.75 or 11.08 hours depending on unit rotation. A variety of shift patterns are available.

- Graduation from a recognized nursing education program.
- Current BCLS-HCP required.
- Graduate with a Baccalaureate of Nursing from an approved school of nursing within twelve months of the date of hire.
- Not currently in a regular full-time or regular part-time position with AHS.
AHS values the diversity of the people and communities we serve and is committed to attracting, engaging and developing a diverse and inclusive workforce.
