Remote but conceptually delightful & viable property & structures in Penny BC
2.1 acres (1 hectare ) with main house and many outbuildings for sale in Penny BC
sale price is $62,800 (which is the assessed value) Property is a lot and a half and may be capable of being divided ( but it never suited our needs to try)
Penny is 95 km SE of Prince George and is accessible via hwy 16 & then across fraser river by boat or back roads through sinclair Mills Longworth etc by vehicle. Also accessible by VIA rail from Jasper or Prince George. Penny was the site of a former interior BC large lumber mill know as Penny Spruce Lumber which sprung up in 1916 as the train line was going though to Prince Rupert . The mill lasted until the 1960s when things began to be consolidated in Prince George and upper Fraser . At its peak there were approximately 800 people in Penny with everything coming in by train or across the river by boat or ice bridge. Now there are just a handful of full time and some seasonal residents .Not sure how many properties there are in Penny probably somewhere around two dozen including some farms acreages and places like ours.
The original part of our main structure was probably built in the 1940s and is about 400square feet . A storey and a half addition was added by local Norwegian/Canadian carpenter Victor Melos) in the 1950s or early 60s with two bedrooms and approx 600 more square feet . There are many outbuildings .A 40/16? foot workshop and former ranger station that we bought and brought over, a former CN operators bunkhouse (32X12 feet?) that we bought and dragged over, a small living cabin and more .The water source is from a paid government license($106 for 2years) from a boxed spring up above the property and red mountain creek is just a stone’s throw to the east of our property as another source of fresh water. 2015 taxes were $330.64
There is no grid electricity in Penny at the moment
We will be leaving most things as is with the property such as stoves, heaters generator ,firewood, tools etc but will be taking some furniture, dishes and other important to us items. We would need some help removing these items and would be wiling to bargain for such .
The buildings and land will require some work depending on the uses you envision for the place .Square footage is approximate.
We bought the place in 1977 while we were in Vancouver working on a series of conceptual and tactile sculptures, writings and other universal playthings .We bought Penny and took all of our workings/materials/idea from Vancouver to Penny via truck, automobile. van, train box car, post and any other method of transport that would allow us to continue our work and play .The Penny years (1977 to 1985)were hard but productive in many ways and we continue to configure and reconfigure always on the lookout for the right grease to smooth the universal gears .
There is a Facebook group re penny and you have to sign into Facebook and search groups for lived in or loved Penny British columbia
