German Angora rabbits are the heavy wool producers of the angora rabbit breed. German angoras are sheared like sheep producing as much wool as a small sheep annually at a fraction of the cost. Annually, the yield tops in about 3 - 5 lbs of clean wool that does not require washing prior to processing as sheep wool does. Cost of breeding stock is similar to quality purebred pedigreed sheep. They are an investment but after initial costs for breeding stock and housing the cost to raise them is about $8 -$10 each per month. The wool sells for $16 - $25 an oz for clean raw wool or $45 up for 100 grams of spun yarn . It can be handspun or sent to a local mill or the angora wool co-op for processing, but is also great for felting production, dry or wet felted .

Like other angora wool from angora rabbits, it is 8x warmer than wool and is the warmest fiber on the planet. It has all the benefits of wool like breathability and ability to wick moisture to keep the wearer dry. It also regulates temperature so you are never too warm. It is odor resistant, fire retardant, and antimicrobial. Like wool it is biodegradable and sustainable. Angora has wonderful characteristics that it also shares with other natural protein exotic fibers like mohair and alpaca that give it additional insulating value by trapping air between the lofty fibers. But angora also has thermal properties unique to angora. This means that the fiber is hollow and adds warmth in addition to its insulating qualities. These thermal properties have the amazing benefit of increasing circulation. By increasing blood flow and thereby reducing inflammation, angora has the ability to alleviate pain of arthritis, carpal tunnel and other circulation difficulties.

German Angora rabbits were bred in Germany to have dense wool and higher production than the French and English angoras that shed their coats . The wool continues to grow until it is sheared every 90 days. Initially they were bred for white wool that could be dyed. They were imported into Canada in the 80's and 90's and are now raised throughout North America. Color was introduced to the breed in North America for Hybrid Germans . The Standard for German Angoras and the colored hybrids and wool production is maintained by the German Angora Rabbit Co-op in North America. The German Angora Breed Standard for conformation and wool production is held by the International Association (of) German Angora Rabbit Breeders (IAGARB). It provides opportunities for producers to register the individual rabbits and to send the angora fiber for processing into yarn through the co-op.
