Reporting to the Team Leader, Business Intelligence the Business Intelligence Professional supports the BI team to meet scheduled deliverables. The BI team is responsible and accountable for providing business intelligence exhibits and support on a regular and ad hoc basis to business users for effective decision-making. The BI team functions as the central corporate resource for operational information data requests. The incumbent may work on requests for any level of business customer under the direction of senior BI staff, but is expected to work more independently than an entry level BI Professional.

Requests are reviewed, investigated and prioritized on a daily basis by senior BI staff. The incumbent is assigned moderately complex requests and tasks based on his/her developed skill and reliability. He/she is responsible for the complete analysis, design, development and testing of the queries and delivery of the results under the direction of the Team Leader and possibly Senior BI Professionals. Wherever possible, requests are satisfied through the data in the CDW; otherwise any available corporate data sources may be used (including various company source systems). The incumbent is also responsible for operational reports/processes to execute on a regular schedule. He/she also provides training and support to business managers and analysts across the organization. All BI Professionals are responsible for documentation regarding corporate data, queries, query tools and associated items.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

CDW Data Integrity


  • Contributes to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the data in the CDW by providing business requirements and participating in the design and testing processes for all CDW development changes and enhancements in co-operation with ITS support teams
  • Investigates and documents issues related to data in the CDW, then works with IT to implement changes to resolve the problem
  • Conducts User Acceptance Testing for any CDW changes as part of project-initiated work (e.g. Product & Pricing changes)
BI Requests


  • Analyzes moderately complex requests from business customers as assigned by the BI Team Leader or senior BI staff
  • Designs and tests approved query reports or data extracts against CDW or any corporate data sources; may run one time or prepare for implementation by senior BI staff into production
Data Management


  • Recommends additional CDW data, tables and /or datamarts based on needs of business community
  • Communicates with IT to develop, test, distribute and maintain required results
Operational and Self-Serve Reports


  • Designs, develops, tests and maintains moderately complex operational and self-serve reports for application systems in collaboration with senior BI staff
Intermediate BI Accountabilities


  • Responds to moderately complex requests of internal and external stakeholders related to standard reports and processes
  • Applies knowledge of business and systems to ensure data is "cleansed" for accuracy
  • Participates in peer reviews and proposes suggestions for improvements
  • Creates detailed documentation for all work that is created
  • Adheres to BI "How We Work" process
JOB REQUIREMENTS:


  • A university or college degree in computer science, business with computer science minor or a related discipline
  • Preference will be given for prior work experience in business intelligence within the property and casualty insurance industry
  • Strong analytical abilities proven over a minimum of two years of related experience, especially in the area of understanding business users' needs and matching those needs to data availability
  • Maturity under pressure, good self-management skills and ability to perform effectively in a busy team environment
  • Solid written and oral communication skills
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:


  • Previous experience preferably in Cognos 10 Report Studio, Cognos 10 Analysis Studio, Base SAS, Microsoft Office tools, Exceed (Hummingbird Neighbourhood), IBM Data Studio, Adobe Professional, TSO/ISPF environment, DB2 SQL, Oracle SQL and understanding of relational databases - preferably DB2 and Oracle
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite such as Outlook and Sharepoint with focus on Excel
  • Solid understanding of systems development life cycle with emphasis on requirements definition and testing
  • Exposure to Agile development using Kanban management methodology preferred
