Do you know what your tenant rights are?
A landlord cannot ask for more than first and last month’s rent at the start of a tenancy. You cannot be asked for a ‘damage deposit’.
By law, the landlord has to provide his/her name and mailing address at the beginning of a tenancy. That way, you have a way of contacting him/her about maintenance issues, etc.
A landlord has to give you written 24-hour notice before he/she enters you apartment, unless it’s an emergency.
A landlord cannot charge you extra for paying your rent by cheque? You are not obligated to pay by ‘preauthorized debit withdrawals’.
After a one-year lease, you can rent on a month-to-month basis, you only have to give your landlord 60 days written notice that you are moving out.
Have a maintenance problem? Call the Waterloo City-bylaw inspection officer at 1-519-747-8751
