Best used baby items

Shopping for a new baby can be overwhelming. Parents spend a lot of money on baby items that are only used for a short period of time. It’s expensive and ultimately it can be wasteful.

Rather than being the first-time parent who buys new on everything, it’s worth taking a closer look at your checklist and determining which baby items you can and should buy used.

It makes sense to purchase new car seats, but many other big investment baby items such as cribs, strollers, carriers, and highchairs are easy to find gently-used. Smaller items such as cloth diapers and toys really start to add up. It’s worthwhile to shop for gently used baby items in these categories as well.

Here are the top baby items it makes sense to buy used.

Cribs
A well-made crib such as a brand-name Stokke crib or a simple wood-frame Ikea crib is sturdy enough for multiple babyhoods. If you’re on a budget, shopping used may enable you to upgrade from standard crib to the designer crib.

Cribs made in the last few years will stand up to present day Health Canada regulations. Remember to ask the crib owner for the year the crib was made and for the assembly instructions. You  may want to consider buying a new mattress as it can be difficult to be absolutely sure these are sanitized.

Changing tables

Changing tables are items you don’t need to spend a lot on because they have as short lifespan. Many parents decide to stop using changing tables once their little one starts rolling over, as early as four months. Once you have chosen a used changing table, spring for a new changing pad cover for the cushion to personalize your choice.

Strollers

It can feel like the sky is the limit for stroller prices. Stroller technology is a competitive field. Often the perks of the high-end strollers, whether it’s all-terrain structure or clever double seating, are something you really need but may not be able to afford. Brands such as Bugaboo, Stokke, Uppa, Bumbleride and Thule can easily exceed $500.

Parents who did pay full price often plan for resale and are eager to unload gently-used strollers. There are also deals to be found on the standard mid-range all-in-one stroller. Look for broken components, and ask about getting accessories thrown in, such as rain covers. Then adhere to the basic rule when shopping for used baby gear, check Consumer Product Safety via Health Canada to make sure the stroller is up to regulations and there haven’t been recalls.

Bouncers

Bouncers are incredibly useful for an incredibly short period of time, usually from four to six months. This means many parents have very gently used bouncers to sell. Like all used baby gear, check Consumer Product Safety via Health Canada to make sure the bouncer is up to regulations and there haven’t been recalls. You’ll also want to make sure it has a removable, washable cover.

Baby carriers

Parents love baby-wearing because of the bond it builds between parent and child. It makes life easier when you need to be close to your little one, but you also need the use of your hands. Baby carrier brands with adjustable sizing like Baby Bjorn and Ergo are easy to find used and washable. Like all used baby gear, check Consumer Product Safety via Health Canada to make sure the carrier is up to regulations

Cloth diapers

Believe it or not, cloth diapers are a hot item on the used market. They are meant to be reused and they require a significant investment, so if you think about it, it makes sense. You’ll find both covers and liners for sale new with tags (NWT) or used. Wash them twice (or once if you have a sanitize cycle) and you’re good to go.

Toys

Babies love their toys for a tiny developmental window, often merely weeks, before they’re onto the next stage. Simple toys have long lifespans because they’re hard to break and do not have accessories that can easily get lost. Toys you’ll want to shop for used include nesting cups, wooden blocks, and shape sorters.
