Rainy day tricks to keep your kids entertained
Host a Movie Day
A fun movie or show will keep your kids transported to another time and place, and help them to forget all about the weather outside. Bring out the DVDs and get lost in a classic family film, or binge watch a few episodes of their favorite show. Make it even more fun by breaking out the popcorn maker and whipping up some cinema-style snacks. You can even let little ones invite some of their friends over for the day to make it extra special. Keep everyone comfy with simple floor cushion seating and cozy blankets.
Break out the Board Games
There’s something endearing about a day of family board games. Whether it’s the friendly competition, or the quality time spent together, they’re a heart-warming option when it’s stormy and gray out. There are plenty of new and exciting games out there to discover, as well as timeless picks like Sorry, checkers and Snakes and Ladders that bring a feeling of nostalgia and let you share something from your childhood with your children. For toddlers and little kids, there are even board games that incorporate learning colors, words and numbers to add an educational twist.
Play Dress Up
From toddlers to tweens, dressing up is fun for everyone, and inspires your little one to use their imagination. There are costumes available for almost anything, so the sky’s the limit! Your child can explore exciting jobs like astronauts, firefighters, dancers and more, or imagine being their favorite animal. Take a trip through history and add an old-timey cowboy, sailor or princess costume to the mix. Once they’re all outfitted in their new look, have them act out a scene fitting their character and enjoy the show!
Get Into Creating Art
Unleash your child’s inner Picasso with an indoor art day! Set out newspaper to keep clean-up easy, and let your wee ones loose with paint, crayons, markers, pencil crayons, glue, glitter and more to create a keepsake piece of art. Pick up some kits for particular projects such as model airplanes, birdhouses or other crafts, or keep it simple with an easel and brushes. It’s a great way for your little one to embrace their creativity, and at the end of the day, they’ll have a fun piece of art to decorate their room with. This option is perfect if you have kids of different ages and want something that will keep everyone engaged.
If your kids are determined to be active and want to vent some of their energy, take a look at games that they can play in the house! Whether it’s a rousing round of Twister, trying out a skipping rope or a bout of Hide and Seek, they’ll be able to get some exercise while having fun in these rainy day activities, even if they can’t venture into the great outdoors. There are even indoor versions of sports, like bowling, basketball and more that feature soft, lightweight balls and pieces, so that they can be played safely in the house.
It can feel like a challenge to keep your little bundles of energy entertained when it’s raining out. However, with a few plans in your back pocket, you’ll be prepared to keep them having fun no matter the weather!
