How to prepare for kids going back to school in 2020

Although it may vary from district to district and province to province, Canadians can agree that kids going back to school in 2020 is going to look very different than previous years. While schools continue to prepare in case another quarantine is needed, there are a number of inventive solutions that are being put in place to deliver that quintessential school experience. However, will these changes also affect the types of tools that children will need for back to school? And how can we best set up our homes to accommodate learning from home?

Back to school 2020 supplies list

While traditional school supplies, like No. 2 pencils, rulers and erasers will be just as crucial this year as they always are, there are a number of new items that parents are likely to find on their children’s back to school supplies list for 2020.

Students may be required to wear face coverings or masks throughout the school day, so it’s crucial that your kids have ones that they feel comfortable and confident wearing. Many brands offer playfully-themed styles that reference popular movies, TV shows and musicians that children love. A mask extender can make your child’s mask more comfortable for long-term wearing, and a simple lanyard allows them to safely remove their mask during lunch period.

Another must-have item for back to school shopping during COVID-19 will undoubtedly be hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Small reusable bottles can easily be refilled as they will likely be used frequently throughout the day.

As it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry, another item to look out for this year is an easily washable lunchbox. Although it likely won’t be found on the school’s official list, a dishwasher-safe lunchbox can be disinfected each night to be clean and safe.

Lastly, make sure kids have lots of pens, notebooks and other supplies, as sharing between students will be discouraged.

At-home learning

Like many parents across the country, COVID-19 has significantly changed your everyday life. Like other parents, you too might be asking yourself, “”when are kids going back to school?”” While it will vary depending on where you live, it’s safe to assume that an at-home learning element will be included in almost every scenario. So, how can you prepare your home to make the most of your children’s learning?

Aside from making sure kids have a working tablet, laptop or desktop computer to complete their assignments, there are some other items that make learning at home easier. A reliable pair of headphones can help children focus while a good-quality webcam makes it easy to connect with teachers and peers. Many experts agree that having a separate workspace makes it easier for children and adults alike to give their full attention to the task at hand. While this may not feel possible in smaller spaces, you may be able to find an inventive compromise.

Although traditional at-home tutoring services will no longer be available this school year, Kijiji Village makes it easy to connect with a wide selection of tutors in your own community. Offering a range of online services, you can get your little learner the extra help they need to succeed.
