How I found holiday savings thanks to these second-hand gifts
Over the years, I’ve developed some tips for saving during the holidays thanks to the second-hand economy. From clothing to household goods, games and shimmering technologies, I find everything I need for a fraction of the price. Here’s how!
A festive outfit for a fraction of the price
In the last year, I’ve started to buy more second-hand clothes to save money, but also for environmental reasons. At the moment, there are so many pieces on the second-hand market that it’s very easy to find something that both fits and looks good.
Last month, for example, I was looking to buy a cardigan from a major fashion retailer which was selling it for $25. Not bad, but then I found the same thing very easily in a thrift shop for only $5. It was in good condition and offered in my size! This represents an 80% discount on the original price, a discount I have rarely seen in stores.
Especially during the holidays, we tend to opt for more glittery and chic outfits than what we wear for the rest of the year, and we may only wear them once! From what I have noticed, these are also the pieces that people tend to sell, donate or exchange faster. Just take a look to see what clothes are available near you.
Second-hand gifts that are worth gold
A few years ago, I wanted to give a cell phone to a family member for the holidays. However, I did not have the budget to buy it new. It only took me a few minutes to find the model I wanted to offer and it was just a third of the price. Its state? Like new! It was definitely a good find because it still works today.
Here are the items I prefer to buy second hand for the holidays:
- Books or cookbooks;
- Sports equipment;
- Small appliances such as premium-branded coffee machines or blenders;
- Trendy technologies such as cell phones, tablets and mini laptops;
- Vintage wooden children’s toys;
- Small accent furniture or decorative accessories;
- Kitchen items such as serving trays.
Prices always vary depending on the condition of the item, but it is not uncommon for me to save 50% to 75% compared to the prices in stores. Golden finds at a small price!
My tip: If you are ever looking for something specific and do not find what you are looking for, just post an ad mentioning “looking for …” and let the law of attraction to do the work!
Take advantage of time off to declutter
Many of us are fortunate to have several days off during the holiday season. It’s a good time for us to recharge our batteries and enjoy moments with our family.
But it’s also the right moment to do a good decluttering before the new year really gets rolling. Between visitors arriving, receiving hostess gifts and other holiday presents, perhaps in too-large quantities, one can have the feeling of being overwhelmed by all the things surrounding us.
Turn a decluttering session into a family activity by asking your children to give up the toys they no longer play with or sports equipment that they’ve outgrown. By selling everything you no longer use, you are sure to make a few dozen or even a few hundred dollars to add to the family budget for the new year. Plus, you can help another family make their own memories with the toys and sports equipment.
Look beyond buying new
Over the last few years, I’ve changed my daily habits and adopted more eco-friendly and minimalist values. However, giving presents during the holidays is still firmly ingrained in my habits, because I like to see the smiles on people’s faces when they open the present I carefully selected.
Today, the purchases I make for the holidays are done in a more thoughtful way. Rather than just looking at the product and the price associated with it, I look further. Where was it made? How did it get here? What is its impact on our community and environment?
After some research, I decided that the best way for me to shop was to make second-hand purchases. By giving a second life to these items, we limit the need for something new to be made and transported, and instead can pass the item on to a neighbour. It’s more than just a purchase; we give back directly to our society by making such a gesture.
Saving is not so complicated
In a nutshell, it is possible to save during the holiday season by using second-hand platforms like Kijiji. By finding your festive outfit for parties, finding some second-hand gifts and selling what you no longer use, there will be great savings in store for you! You’ll get to respect your values and your budget while getting 110% enjoyment from the holiday season
