How to Avoid Phishing and Spoofing

Here are a few good tips on how to make sure you’re dealing with Kijiji – and not someone looking for your personal information.

Since 2005, Kijiji has been a trusted online marketplace in Canada. We have millions of items for sale, with two new ads being posted every second! And behind every ad, in every category, is a real person or business – each an important, active member of our Kijiji community.

The ability for people within our community to communicate with each other – and for us to share news, updates and cool features with you – are huge reasons why people have so much success on Kijiji.

As the largest classifieds site in Canada, we are aware that a few bad apples may try to take advantage of our members by pretending to be someone they are not. Generally this is rare, but because we care about our close-knit community, we have prepared a guide to phishing and spoofing to help keep Kijiji a successful, fun and welcoming place.

What are phishing and spoofing?

Phishing is when people try to gain access to your account details in order to commit fraud. Spoofs are fake websites, emails or texts that pretend to be legitimate companies in order to trick users into providing their personal information. Most phishing attempts come in the form of spoofs.

How to tell if you’re being phished

When it comes to phishing, don’t believe your eyes – at least not at first. You may receive an “official looking” email with our Kijiji logo, graphics and colours, but hang on! Read the email. Does it contain alarmist wording like: “Your account has been hacked (or disabled)!” or “Confirm your account details to receive a discount” or similar phrases that are designed to worry you?

If so… don’t click on any links. It’s not us.

How to spot a spoof email or text

When Kijiji contacts its members, it is to provide you with positive, useful information about our community and our service. We never ask for your personal information – bank details, address, phone number or your Kijiji password (unless you have expressly asked to reset yours via our login page). And our team is pretty good at communicating, so if the email or text you receive is filled with grammatical and spelling errors, those are red flags, too.

Remember: Our communications are designed to inform – not alarm.

A few more hints to avoid phishing

Whenever you are asked to click a link within an email, make sure there is an “S” in the https:// in the web address (the “S” stands for secure), and check that “kijiji.ca” is always followed by a forward slash (“/”)

For example, https://help.kijiji.ca/ is a legitimate Kijiji address (there is a forward slash after kijiji.ca) but if you see something like kijiji.ca.contactus.com/ don’t click! You can see kijiji.ca and the forward slash are not together.
