How to turn undesired holiday gifts into cash

Everyone at some point receives gifts they have no use for. Whether it is a well-meaning gift that is not age appropriate, a duplicate of something you already own, an item you have no space for, or just flat out don’t like, there are plenty of reasons to return, re-gift, or sell a present.

After the holidays, Kijiji has lower inventory than other times of the year. If you take advantage of this and begin selling items on Kijiji, your ad will likely stay near the top of search results for longer than usual while people do their Boxing Week shopping.

But, what is the best way to sell an undesired gift?

Post your ad right after December 25th. This is when Kijiji has lower inventory than normal, and more people have the extra time to both search for items and time to pick them up!

What people look for in December and January
With winter still young, people are embracing the outdoors. People are out hitting the slopes with skis and snow pants. Searches for roof racks and car batteries see a big increase along with exercise equipment and sporting goods, likely due to New Year’s resolutions.

Perhaps with all the family visits during the holidays, Canadians realize they need more furniture. So things like Ikea itemssectionalschairs, sofa sets, chandeliers, and dining sets see a large surge of searches in January.

Electronics are always popular, but are also in higher demand after the holidays. So if you’ve upgraded, people are looking for smart TVs, MacBooks, Xbox systems, PlayStation controllers, computer monitors and cameras.

Categories that also see a boost in traffic during the post-holiday season:
•  books, in particular text books. So if you have any marketing, human resources, math or law textbooks that you won’t need next semester, strike while the iron is hot, and post them before a new edition comes out!
• cell phones
• jewellery and watches
• baby items. Historically we have seen increases in searches of about 35% for baby items from December to January, with strollers, car seatsplay pens, and cribs being the hottest items.
• furnitureindoor items for the home, and home appliances (like washers and dryers)
• tools, especially power toolstool storage and benches.

Don’t delay – if you are thinking about posting an ad, do it early!
