What to look for when buying exercise equipment for your home

Cold icy winter is when you leave the office at the end of the day and just want to go home. The gym or Zumba class isn’t even an option anymore. If you’ve got a bit of space, consider buying an exercise machine or some other home fitness equipment. It’s a worthwhile investment for your morale and your health.

We’ve prepared some basic tips for buying exercise machines and related equipment that will help you stay fit this winter. First and foremost, it’s important to ask yourself what your goal is when training. Is it weight loss? Toning muscles? Keeping your spirits up during the winter? Whatever the reason, moving and exercising often require very little equipment. Here are some things to consider.

Treadmill

Manual or motorized treadmills can extend your running program throughout the winter and avoid the discomfort of the cold and snow. You can effectively continue your training year-round by losing weight and improving your performance. Depending on the machine, different training programs are offered, allowing you to keep motivated.

Elliptical

The elliptical is ideal for weight loss. It can help you improve your cardiovascular endurance, and can strengthen your arms while toning your legs and buttocks. To properly choose your elliptical trainer, it’s important to identify your needs, as well as how you’ll use it. Be sure to choose a sturdy unit so it will last. A heavier machine is also better for stability. For regular training (3x per week) and intense workouts, opt for an elliptical bike of at least 1.30 m. Choose a device with an inertia wheel weighing more than 6.8 kg (15 lbs), as it plays a fundamental role in the accuracy of the resistance. The heavier it is, the more comfort and fluidity you will have in your movements.

Weights

Weights can be adapted to all training plans. Depending on the movement, the same weight can strengthen your shoulders, biceps and quads. To begin, use smaller loads – 5, 8 or 10 pounds. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the movements of your exercises, so you can reduce the risk of injury and maximize your strength. Once you have mastered the exercises, increase repetitions and number of sets, and you can start increasing the load of your weights.

Exercise balls

To tone your abdominals, strengthen your back and improve your stabilizers, the exercise ball is the tool for you. Able to integrate into different programs, it allows you to improve your performance and your results. Exercise balls are available in many sizes and it’s how big you are that determines the diameter of the ball. For example, for people 1.52 m to 1.83 m (5 to 6 feet) in height, the ball should be 55 cm in diameter. For people over 1.83 m, a ball 75 to 85 cm in diameter will be ideal.
