Indoor sports to keep you fit this winter

Winter doesn't mean the end of all the physical activity. In fact, many of the sports you love in the summer can also be enjoyed in winter. To get you thinking beyond skating and hockey, we’ve compiled this list of the five best indoor sports to play in the chilly months.

Indoor Beach Volleyball

Who says you have to be outdoors to enjoy a game on the beach? Playing indoor beach volleyball is a great way to enjoy a bit of summer all year round. Both recreational and intermediate indoor beach volleyball leagues are available in almost every city and, best of all, no special equipment is required. This all-ages sport is a great option for getting the entire family out of the house and staying physically active on even the chilliest of winter days.

Table Tennis

If you’d prefer to stay closer to home, why not set up a ping-pong table in your rec room or garage? Kids love the game, so it’s perfect for keeping the whole family entertained on a cold, snowy afternoon. Table tennis is also more physically challenging than it seems, so everyone will get a good workout while playing. When choosing a ping-pong table, you’ll want to take into account the ages and heights of the players. Some tables are shorter and narrower than standard adult tables, making them easier for young children to use.

It may be too cold to take a dip in the lake, but that shouldn’t stop you from indulging in your favourite summer pastime. What makes swimming the ideal indoor winter sport is its accessibility. Public indoor pools are available at recreation centers in almost every city, and many of them are free or inexpensive to use. In addition to regularly scheduled leisure swim times, most pools offer aquatic programs like swimming lessons, aquafit classes, and lifesaving training courses.

Indoor winter soccer is great for people who want to improve their abilities and enjoy the game year-round. Most venues offer indoor skills development clinics for players of all ages and skill levels. House and intermediate indoor winter soccer leagues are available in most cities. Playing indoor soccer is also an excellent way to meet new people, as many clubs organize social events throughout the winter.

One set of this action-packed indoor sport will have you breaking a serious sweat, regardless of how cold it is outside. Can’t find a squash partner? Go solo or join a friendly tournament! If your friends and family are unavailable for a game, there’s nothing preventing you from heading to the nearest court to practice drills, trying out new shots or asking someone at the venue to join you for a game.
