How to turn your T-shirts into DIY pillows and artwork

Don’t know what to do with those unused t-shirts that you love but just don’t wear anymore? Make them last forever by framing them or using them to make pillows.

Grab your supplies

First things first, find some unused t-shirts to use for your project. If you don’t have any laying around the house, search for some t-shirts with your favourite band or design on them on Kijiji. Make sure to also grab some picture frames, a measuring tape, scissors, sewing thread, and a sewing kit. If you don’t own a sewing kit, a needle and some thread will work, too!

Make sure it fits

Lay out your t-shirt on a flat surface and stuff your pillow in it to make sure it will fit once you sew your t-shirt together. Once it’s placed in the t-shirt, flip your t-shirt pillowcase inside out and take a pencil to outline the edges of the pillow to see where there’s extra fabric to cut before

Cut extra fabric

Take out your pillow and follow the lines that you traced to remove extra fabric. The sleeves and the bottom hem of the t-shirt can likely be removed.

Place some pins and sew it up

Once you’ve cut all of the extra fabric, place it onto a flat surface. Next, place some pins through the fabric on three of the four sides of the pillow in a very straight line. Using your sewing machine or needle and thread, sew your pillowcase, leaving an opening for your pillow on one side.

Flip it back around and stuff the shirt

Flip your t-shirt pillowcase again to make it right-side out and stuff your pillow into your shirt.

Hand sew to close

Once your pillow is in your t-shirt pillowcase, use a needle and thread to sew the opening of your pillowcase. Make sure to tie a knot at the end so that the stitching stays in place!

T-shirt art

Flatten Your Shirt and Measure it. Once you’ve chosen a shirt to frame, lay it down on a flat surface. Put your picture frame on top and trace the edges with a pencil to measure how much of the shirt will fit into the frame.

Cut it out

Once you’ve traced where you need to cut your shirt, grab a pair of scissors and cut it.

Frame that beauty

Place your t-shirt inside of the frame, put together the frame, and you’re done!

Love your style

Put your framed artwork up on the walls and put your pillows on your chairs or couch. Congratulate yourself on your work and enjoy your new decorations!
