With the right information, selling your computer can be a breeze.

Here’s some advice to help you make a safe and profitable sale.

Describe important elements

Take the time to list components that characterize the performance of the computer that you would like to sell. By right-clicking on the mouse (on Windows) and selecting properties on the “My Computer” icon, you will see a list of the main technical characteristics of your computer such as: the processor (type and speed), the size of the RAM, and the type of operating system (32 or 64 bits).

On the same information page, the “Device Manager” tab will give you a complete list of your computer’s parts, including:

  • hard drives installed,
  • the graphic card(s),
  • monitors and displays
  • sound card

Once these items are listed you will have outlined all the basic technical information required for a seamless sale.

On a Mac, to access system information, click on “System Report”. A window will then open listing the version of the computer, its screen type, release date, processor, graphic card and the serial number of the device.

The usage of the computer

Besides the parts, it’s useful to specify what the computer has been used for most of the time. For example, did you play hours of video games, has it travelled a lot or been dropped, and try to be as honest as possible.

For your safety, and that of the buyer during a sale, it is essential to make sure you remove all personal data from the computer. Hard disk reformatting and reinstallation of the operating system from scratch is a mandatory step to ensure that no information remains on the computer. Same goes for software licenses, be sure to uninstall them at the time of sale or transfer them if you want to enhance the selling price.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Before you put your computer on sale, make sure your computer is clean. If it’s a tower, clean the interior components. Cleanliness is generally indicative of proper maintenance. Then take photos of the inside of your computer (as clean as possible) and any boxes of components, if you still have them.

Original boxes with warranty papers and instruction booklets, as well as dedicated peripherals, will enhance the value of the sale, whether it is for a laptop or a desktop.

On the other hand, it may be more cost-effective to sell your computer in parts (it’s even better with boxes) instead of a single unit.

Yes, but at what price?

In the second-hand computer market, expect a price difference of about 30% compared to a new computer or a computer in very good condition. It’s mostly a question of “good timing” when to put on sale, such as when a new model is announced or a new generation of graphics cards or processors are going to be released on the market. As for Macs, the selling price is still a little higher than for PCs, but do not be too greedy either. The website will give you a realistic resale price for your Mac.

Finally, an ad will be successful or interesting if it includes the following:

  • A good level of detail about the technical aspects of the computer
  • Good images that clearly show the computer (inside for a tower, communication ports, general state, keyboard for a laptop, etc.)
  • A list of installed or uninstalled software and the status of the operating system
  • A reasonable price. Look at several ads to give you an idea of the market price for a given model.
  • Include the boxes, booklets, and list any parts under warranty.
