How to stay fit with tech

When it comes to getting in shape, no training app or online workout video can entirely take the place of actually heading to the gym or hitting the weights.

But that’s not to say that technology can’t play an important role in helping you achieve your fitness goals.

Getting in shape, after all, is just as much a mental activity as it is a physical one, which is why technology can help keep you motivated and on track, regardless of whether you workout at home, at the park, or at the gym. With the following five technologies, you can give your workout regimen a boost and hit your fitness goals faster.

Smart watches

Wearable technology is all the rage when it comes to technology and fitness. Fitbit has been the trailblazer in showing how wearable technology, especially watches, can keep people motivated and moving. However, Fitbit is not the only watch-like device that can help you achieve your fitness goals. Other watches focus on specific types of workouts or concerns, such as monitoring your heart rate or coaching you through particular running goals, such as when to slow down so that you can push yourself further.

Smartphone Apps

When it comes to training apps, you are spoiled for choices. There are literally thousands of different apps available, each one focusing on a different fitness goal, such as bodybuilding, weight loss, marathon running, and more. Good apps will include workout routines, short videos, diagrams, and even ways to connect with other app users with similar fitness goals. Many apps are free (although with in-app purchases), but to truly separate the good ones from the bad look at reviews to find out what other users are saying.

Calendars

A big reason many people fail in their fitness goals is that they never set aside the time each day to meet them. While not a fitness device per se, a trusty calendar or day planner may be as useful in hitting your workout goals as your weights and running shoes are. A simple calendar app that allows you to schedule your weight loss workout at the same time every day (or every couple days) is a simple but massive step towards actually working out consistently.

Workout videos

Online workout videos are like having your own personal trainer in your home for free (or at least very cheap). You can find some really great men’s and women’s online exercise/workout videos either on YouTube or you can even purchase weight loss exercise video DVDs. These videos are particularly useful for home workouts as they help keep motivation high while ensuring your technique remains good.

Fitness video games

Speaking of motivation, perhaps the best way of keeping your motivation high when working out is by turning exercise into a game. There are a lot of different varieties of fitness video games. At one end there are the traditional video game consoles where where you can dance, play tennis, or enter the boxing ring all in the comfort of your living room. On the other end there are treadmills and exercise bikes with built-on screens that will have you feeling like you are racing through various different virtual environments.

Weight loss is hard work, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Thanks to gadgets, apps, and other types of technology, hitting your weight loss and fitness goals is now easier and more entertaining than ever before.
