HeART- Half Day Art Summer Day Camps
HeART is a mental wellness art program for youth by youth which was founded in January 2019. In the program, youth express themselves through a variety of creative forms, while learning and practicing mindfulness, in a supportive peer setting.
HeART is a youth-led program which means our youth participants help shape the program, and no two sessions will ever be the same. Through this process youth gain leadership and self-determination skills.
HeART is an ever-changing program that changes and adapts to the needs of children and youth in the community. This looks like but is not limited to: In-person programming, school-based programming, day camp-style programming, virtual programming, and our new initiative HeART in a box.
HeART’s approach to summer camp programming:
We believe youth are the best designers of their own summer camp and we in turn support in doing so. Our facilitators plan the first day and bits of camp throughout the week so youth can see the structure of the camp.
Going forward after our first day together we continue supporting youth to take the lead. By doing so we are helping youth build leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and take control of their own leisure lifestyles.
Structure of the camp: Check In, Warm up Game, Mindfulness Exercise, Warm up Art Activity, Snack (to be brought from home), Art Activities, Game, Plan for tomorrow, check out.
We know at times this can be a rocky ride for youth as they often are not given this much power. As facilitators we are to support them in making choices and working through conflict. We are there to support them when their plans may not meet their expectations and to celebrate their successes.
All camps take place in and around HeartWood Center for Community Youth Developments office in downtown Halifax, NS.
This summer, to follow Public Health Guidelines, our camps will.. - Have 7 youth participants and 2 facilitators -Take place inside and outside -Reduce the sharing of supplies -Extra cleaning of supplies which are shared -Follow physical distancing guidelines.
