This framed work is in excellent condition. My sense is that it was framed about 50 years ago but I don’t know for sure. It is beautiful reproduction of an important etched world map in two hemispheres — new world on the left and old world on the right — from the 17 Century. Joan Blaeu was a reknowned Dutch cartographer. The image’s tones are achieved from gold leaf / foil and turquoise with elaborate notations and oceanic inscriptions / imagery. The map is glazed and set in attractive multi-layered mats of light brown, deep olive green and maroon. The frame is a deep rich mahogany colour and, indeed, may be made of mahogany wood. The image measures about 21 x 16.5 inches while the over all dimensions are about 27 by 30.5 inches. The back of the frame witnesses superior assembly and it is in good condition. However there is no evidence of the origin of the framing. There are various images of this very hard to photograph map on the internet and one of its beauties is that it tends to take on the tones of the space in which it is hung. You will not be disappointed with this intriguing, framed, world map of four centuries ago.
