Description

This is the second of two Imperial Presentation Gilt Ebony Framed Ranma carved in the pre-Tokugawa style created for the First Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate Ieyasu Tokugawa, with the first being in the Japanese Imperial Family Collection. There are perhaps 100 or more pieces of intricate joinery, with quite a few amateur restorations made to the Ranma, for the most part to account for 400 years of shrinkage. Amazingly the joinery on both Shishi is still tight. Approximately 60-80 years ago the Ranma went through a cleaning process to remove most of the soot and carbon residue from the Great Miereki Fire of 1657. There was a gilt pine frame with brass backing applied to the back of the original frame that was in the process of dissentegrating, however now the Ranma is quite solid. The Ranma weighs approx. 180 LBS. and measures including the original frame 30 inches in height, by 66 inches in length, by 6-7 inches in depth. Much of the polychrome decoration is still evident. I only found the Tokugawa Clan "Mon" inside the largest blooming Chrysanthemum about a year ago. The top central gilt copper plaque contains one large Chrysanthemum, with the bottom plaque having two slightly smaller ones. The second from the last image is of a carved Bombay Blackwood Throne Chair purchased from the estate sale of Wajid Ali Shah held I believe in 1858, outside the walled city of Kaiserbagh. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was the last King in India. Interestingly there are Indian Alligators holding cobras in their mouths (they were the mythological guardians of the throne room), carved in relief to the tops of both arms on the chair. The stylized coat of Arms for "OUDH" can be seen at the top back on the chair. Wajid Ali Shah used to ride around his walled city on a saddled giraffe, and his 500 wives also lived with him in their own quarters, and enjoyed a market inside the walled city for shopping. Pricing for the Ranma - $200,000.00 Dollars.... Wajid Ali Shah Throne Chair $4000.00 Dollars
