Description

Ancient Greek coin of the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Believed to be Cleopatra VII, yes, THAT Cleopatra. Obverse, laureate head of Zeus facing right. Reverse, statue of Zeus standing left, stalks of grain right, long sceptre left, star above. Please see note card for full description, attribution and catalogue numbers. Nea Paphos was probably built by Nicocles, the last king of Paphos, at the end of the 4th century BC. By the beginning of the 2nd c. BC it became the capital of the island of Cyprus, replacing Salamis during the Hellenistic era under the Ptolemies.
