DID YOU KNOW - Platinum is one of the world's rarest precious metals and most expensive to harvest explaining why annual global production is about 8 million ounces or only 10% of the world's Gold production. With 90 percent of supply coming from South Africa and Russia, supply is limited, often uncertain, making the metal far more rarer than other investment metals like gold and silver. The "white silver" metal used in the making of fine watches, jewellery, car parts and other consumer and industrial goods, is also the heaviest of the precious metals, weighing almost twice as much as gold. The price of platinum, like other industrial commodities, is more volatile than gold. For instance, in the 2008 global downturn, Platinum dropped from $2,252 an oz to $774 oz, a loss of almost 2/3 its value while gold dropped from about $1,000 to $700 oz during the same time period for a loss of 1/3 its value.

However, "during periods of economic stability and growth, Platinum prices tend to be as much as twice the price of gold."

Today, in times of meagre to mild growth worldwide amid long term economic uncertainty, platinum is trading at $856.65 an oz versus Silver at just $15.52 (see below).
