More on this Banknote's Portraits and History

This bill features Lord and Lady Grey, they of colourful, tumultuous reign that ended in execution! Not your glamorous Princess Elizabeth at 8 years of age 1935 $20 banknote featuring the future, long reigning Queen Elizabeth success story, but more like its antithesis, yet still part of Canada's banknote heritage and history that you might like in your own collection. But first, here's the historical background and a sampling of key events from that year.

Lady Jane Grey (1537-1554), known later as Lady Jane Dudley (after marriage) and the "Nine Days' Queen" was an English noblewoman who held the throne of England and Ireland from 10 July until 19 July 1553. Jane was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII thru his younger daughter Mary and first cousin once removed of Edward VI. Unfortunately for her, The Privy Council of England suddenly changed sides and proclaimed Mary Queen thus deposing Jane. Her primary supporter (father-in-law), the Duke of Northumberland, was accused of treason and executed less than a month later. Jane was held prisoner in the Tower, and then convicted of high treason for a death sentence. Mary initially spared her life; however, Jane was seen as a threat when her father, Henry Grey (Duke of Suffolk) became involved with "Wyatt's Rebellion" against Queen Mary's intention to marry King Phillip of Spain. Ultimately, on 12 Feb. 1554, Jane and husband were executed. At the time of her death, Jane was just 16 or 17 years old. Sounds like a "Game of Thrones" type story.

Events during the year 1911 when the two were featured on the Dominion of Canada banknote featured some likewise interesting, odd and historic moments. These include:

Madame Marie Curie (1867 - 1934), the Polish born, naturalized-French physicist/chemist who pioneered research on radioactivity, becoming the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and first to win a Nobel Prize twice in two scientific fields. Her husband, Pierre, was a co-winner of her first Nobel Prize, making them the first-ever married couple to win the Nobel Prize.

In Canada, 1911 was a watershed moment in Canadian history. The long reign of Sir Wilfrid Laurier came to an unexpected end when Conservative leader Sir Robert Borden became P.M. replacing him. Laurier went into the election believing the creation of the Canadian Navy would be a boost to his election chances but Henri Bourassa had campaigned so vigorously against the Act claiming that what it meant was an active alliance in the Imperial Strategy of Great Britain and Boer War and Canada going dragged into European and other colonial affairs resulting in young Canadians dying in foreign battlefields in the name of Britain and the British Empire. The strategy drained the Liberals of Quebec support. Borden would not have much time before the great struggle of the First World War.

In international affairs, the new year saw the London "Siege of Sidney Street" when two Latvian anarchists died after a seven-hour siege against a police and military. Home Secretary Winston Churchill oversaw events.

On Jan. 14, Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition made landfall on the eastern edge of the Ross Ice Shelf. Days later, Eugene Ely landed on the deck of the USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco, the first time an aircraft landed on a ship. On Jan 26, the U. S. and Canada announced their first trade agreement. February saw the revolution in Haiti suppressed after the leader, General Montreuil Guillaume, was captured by government troops and shot. March 19 celebrated International Women's Day for the first time in Europe, and on June 22, George V and Mary were crowned King and Queen of the U.K. and the British Dominions.

August of this year saw Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa stolen from the Louvre museum in Paris by Vincenzo Peruggia; only to be returned in 1913 and on Sept. 29, Italy declared war on the Ottoman Empire.

In baseball, the Philadelphia Athletics defeated the N. Y. Giants, 13–2, to win the World Series. The play of the game featured an unusual inside-the-park home run by the A's Jack Barry, on a bunt!

In November, Chevrolet entered the automobile market in the U. S., in competition with the Ford Model T while The Treaty of Berlin split Morocco between France (as a protectorate) and Spain (as the colony of Spanish Sahara), with Germany forfeiting all claims to Morocco. In return, France gives Germany a portion of the French Congo just as Italy annexed Tripoli and Cyrenaica.

There you go, crazy year by some standards or an exciting year for others. Mark the events with the purchase of the Lord and Lady Grey $1 banknote but hurry, it likely won't last long!
