Arts and Crafts Gilson Oak Leather Swivel Office Chair, c.1910

A rare quality arts and crafts oak and leather swivel office chair from circa 1910 made by Gilson Manufacturing Company of Guelph, Ontario, the Canadian branch of the US Gilson company which was founded in 1855. Sometime before 1900 the company began making chair irons, which form the base center of a swivel chair, and received a series of patents for innovative improvements to office chairs that added various tilt and swivel features. The chair is fully original with no alterations. It has old metal casters, cast iron hardware with Gilson Canada foundry mark, quality patinated leather cover and big metal 3/4" dome tacks lining the seat and the back. It is extremely heavy. In very good condition for its age, with the front leather edge of the seat slightly cracked. Measures 26 3/4 “ wide with arm handles in the seat area and 21” at the back. The seat is 19” high and 19” deep. Total height of the chair is 36” but is adjustable.
