A 5-cent stamp commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Erie Canal was issued July 4, 1967. It denotes the start of construction on the canal linking the waters of Lake Erie in the west and the Hudson River; an engineering marvel when it was built, some called it the Eighth Wonder of the World. Proposed in 1808, ground was broken to start construction of the canal on July 4, 1817 and it was completed on October 26, 1925.
Here is an addressed FIRST DAY COVER with a block of four 150th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ERIE CANAL 5 Cent stamps with Rome NY postmark on day of issue. This FDC has an attractive coloured illustration of the ground breaking ceremony on July 4 1817. It is offered for sale at only $4.
