On May 20th 1972 Richard Nixon left Washington enroute to Russia for a week of summit meetings with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and other Soviet officials. On May 26, Nixon and Brezhnev signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT), the most significant of the agreements reached during the summit. In addition, the groundwork was laid for a joint space flight in 1975.
