Description

Private Sale - Estate Collection of internationally known figurative Canadian Sculptress and Artist Mary Hecht (1931-2013). Collection includes more than twenty bronze cast sculptures and a variety of watercolour, pastel, ink drawings and other works. Hecht's works draw deep from the reservoir of human experience, the worlds of music, literature and drama, biblical themes and on events that have impinged on the collective consciousness. These compelling "impressionistic/expressionistic" forms in bronze and on paper testify to Hech'ts intuitive understanding and empathy with her fellow human beings. This is an opportunity to enhance your collection at pricing well below gallery prices for her works.

Centred around themes of wisdom, strength in adversity and emotional catharsis, Hecht's subject matter is often informed by issues in history, identity and myth from Judaic and classical traditions.

Mary Hecht was born in Manhattan, New York in 1931 and raised in Glen Falls, N.Y. . She emigrated to Canada in 1970 and attained dual Canadian/ U.S. citizenship in 1981. Her formal education began with a B.A. from the University of Cincinatti in 1952 and a Master of Arts at the University of Iowa in 1957 where she studied sculpture. During this period she also studied at art schools including the Art Students League and Columbia University in NYC (1949 -1953) and the Camberwell School in London, 1958-1960.

At Camberwell she learned the process of bronze casting. While there her friend told her abut Kenneth Armitage, a sculptor who worked by dripping wax on paper and using shapes to create an abstract sculpture and she adopted this process.

Mary Hecht returned to the U.S. with a finished wax and found the Modern Art Foundry where she was supported by the Spring family and worked doing some of the welding in the mid sixties until fatigue from her then undiagnosed MS forced her to resign. At home she refined her process learned at Camberwell of working with wax using bronze welding rods and welding one piece of wax to the others contiguous to it with a red hot knife. In the foundry she worked all the steps for the bronze doing the cleaning, finishing and controlling the colouring.

Her particular casting process used is also known as the lost wax method whereby the sculptural form is created when molten bronze replaces the original wax model. This labour intensive and ancient practice has been skillfully applied resulting in exceptional sculptures available for sale.

That's the how and when of her work, whereas the what of her work stems from Rodin as well as the French and German Expressionists of the early 20th century with echoes of the Byzantine. In the early 1950s she was greatly influenced by the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz and the original waxes that were in Degas' studio when it was reopened after WWII. Her studies after WW II veered towards Abstract Expressionism. The content of her faces come from Goya, Roualt, the Byzantine, Bernard Reder, Germaine Richier and Theodore Rozak and Rodin. From Beethoven, Stravinsky and Shubert to to Maimonides, Martin Buber and John des Posos. In one of her letters she writes "I was probably among the last Art students who learned to draw from the human figure, using the reality outside my eyes a well as its reality within my head...... I therefore call myself an Impressionist/Expressionist." Like Rodin's work though, she seeks to capture her figures in an instant of time to address the idea of the transitory aspect of nature.

Her sculptural works are extremely heavy not just in terms of physical weight, but in content as well. She writes "the sculptures come out deafening and turbulent, sonorous and powerful."

As noted, Mary Hecht's sculpture traces its sources from more than one stream, but most notably flows from Expressionism - Node, Krichner, Munsch, Beckmann - as well as the French tradition from Rodin and Lipschitz.

Mary Hecht was an elected member of both the American Society of Contemporary Artists and the Sculptor's Society of Canada. Her extensive exhibition history documents participation in approximately seventy (70) selected solo and group shows across North and South America and Europe. Her works are held in several international public and private collections. She has also taught at the Modern Art Foundry and York University.

Her paintings and drawings included in this estate collection reflect her signature aesthetic. They offer an intimate view of simultaneous developments of form across various media.

Rochelle Holt in 1998 writes "The consistent tendency towards, and significance of, figuration in twentieth century art in spite of forces of Conceptual Art, and Formalism raises question within issues around the body pertinent to contemporary discourse. The aesthetic, technical and critical aspects in the work of Mary Hecht place he as one of the "Foremost women of the XX Century".

This is an unprecedented opportunity to purchase her works privately at estate wind up pricing which is up to 80% below original gallery and art show prices. Some pieces are being sold at even below the original foundry costs alone. Call, e-mail or text for private viewing.
