Gaston Rebry Original Oil Painting - Top Listed Canadian Artist

Original oil painting on canvas by listed Canadian artist Gaston Rebry (1933-2007). It is signed in the bottom right and is dated 1990 and titled on the back as being of the Saint Elie area in the Mauricie region. Included is the artist's original authentication stamp on the back of the canvas. The painting is 18" x 24" and it is in its original 1990 gallery frame with liner. Gaston Rebry - Biography

Canadian Quebec artist Gaston Rebry was born in October of 1933 in Belgium. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Menin, from 1952 to 1953 in his home country of Belgium. Abandoning his cycling career, Rebry immigrated to Quebec in 1955 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1954 to 1955. Quebec and was a member of the Institut des arts figuratifs (I.A.F.). On January 5th 2007 Gaston Rebry passed away in Shawinigan, Quebec due to pneumonia.

Rebry like many of his generation, was influenced by the Group of Seven as well as works of fellow Quebec artists such as Marc-Aurèle Fortin and Léo Ayotte. Using his outstanding technical skill and inspired by the country side around Quebec’s Mauricie region, he started producing many delightful landscape paintings including fall and winter scenes including the winter scene from Mauricie being offered here for sale.

Gaston Rebry was fascinated by light and attempted to capture its nuance in the water, sky, leaves and trees as they were before settlers arrived. In that respect he was totally at one with nature. He never replicated what he saw but rather allowed it to inspire him and create new and unique approaches to Canadian landscapes. A lush paradise where the sky, forest, snow and water rule supreme - nature untouched by the human or animal world..

When asked how long it takes to complete a painting, Rebry replied, 40 years! To him each painting was the culmination of his experience as an artist and the expression of his life. Each canvas reflected nearly fifty years of close communion with nature drawing the viewer into the depth of his dramatic landscapes. .

Gaston Rebry’s works are in major corporate and private collections and were often given as a state gift by then Prime Minister Jean Chretien to visiting dignitaries as well as Pope John Paul II in 1998.
