A rare antique in very fine condition. This miniature clock was part of my grandmother’s vanity set gifted to her in the early 1920s. A stylish Art Deco period it was an indispensable fixture in the bedroom – wound up with care each night.
(FYI – Grandma’s bedroom was definitely NOT as fancy as photos 6 & 7 demonstrate!)
The clock measures approximately 7¾” wide x 4” high x 3” deep. It is a very scarce item as it has the wind key (currently seems to be a bit overwound – how to unwind?), it has the back plate over the mechanisms, no cracks nor chips, was manufactured by the Tusco Company, and has always been in one family for over 100 years!
Although this century clock is hallmarked “FRENCH IVORY”, that was just a trade name. The clock was actually created from handmade materials imitating ivory. This early piece really does look like ivory, complete with the characteristic Schreger lines / horizontal striations.
The mini-mantel style clock was designed to be part of a 1920s vanity set (photo 5) with all of those pieces marked “FRENCH IVORY”, (really they were celluloid, fortunately, not real ivory!). Advertising campaigns for these ‘add-on’ sets were widespread in the 1920s, especially in magazines. (photo 8) A unique piece of art for your home or office … not really to tick the time since it is overwound.
