Description

Rare Find! This antique hand carved Solid Oak side table is uniquely ornate. Detailed carved edges along the one piece top and a flat edge scalloped undershelf. (The undershelf nicely takes the place of a typical stretcher.) Perhaps the most eye catching detail of this piece, are the four splayed legs, (often referred to as turned legs). The wide ‘tight’ spiral twist legs are very distinctive and date to the Victorian period of the mid-1850s.* A detail much sought after by many savvy designers. Beautiful wood grain character.

This 2-Tier Victorian era parlor table measures approximately 29” x 24” x 24” square. The table is solid and sturdy – amazing for its age! There is scratching to the table top, but it could be refinished. I’m wondering if the four legs have received some attention because I can see Roman numerals (I – IV) pencilled in underneath. (photo 7) The table was purchased in 1952 from an antique shop, (photo 6) and has been in our family’s homes ever since. We are downsizing to a condominium suite and this one-of-a-kind antique is now available to be displayed in a new home.

The 19th century treasure could be used as an end table, side table, nightstand or ‘accent table’. Originally it was a Library table in the front room. Asking just $195.00 Safe and easy pickup in the Rossland Road and Garden St. area of WHITBY. Please TEXT 905-439-4640 or email mzm@sympatico.ca

*Spiral Leg: This extremely old style of furniture leg resembles a twisted rope. It is thought to have originated in India, and the style traveled westward across Europe in the mid-17th century to Portugal, Holland, and then England where it flourished from around 1660 to about 1703. These legs are especially characteristic of ‘Restoration’ and ‘William and Mary’ furniture, but they enjoyed a comeback 100 years later in late Empire and Federal pieces. It was revived yet again in the mid-19th century and used on many Victorian furniture pieces. Spiral legs are sometimes referenced as spiral-twist or barley-twist, (especially in England).
