    Description

This beautiful original embroided mid century framed wall art picture of Pinkie measures approx 16'' in length by 19 1/2'' wide to the edge of wood frame. It is in great condition despite some minor scratches on the frame.

Pinkie is the traditional title for a portrait made in 1794 by Thomas Lawrence in the permanent collection of the Huntington Library at San Marino, California where it hangs opposite The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough. The title now given it by the museum is Sarah Goodin Barrett Moulton: "Pinkie". It is an elegant depiction of Sarah Moulton, who was about eleven years old when painted. These two works are the centerpieces of the institute's art collection, which specialises in eighteenth-century English portraiture.

Cross stitch and needlework can be found in the earliest history, as far back as sixth century BC. Needlework has existed as long as there has been cloth to work it on. The roots of needlepoint go back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians, who used small slanted stitches to sew up their canvas tents. Howard Carter, of Tutankhamen fame, found some needlepoint in the cave of a Pharaoh who had lived around 1500 BC. Pieces of embroidery and needlework have been found preserved in ancient Egyptian tombs and in Medieval churches all over the world.
