The Making of a Smudging Feather
For each feather that gets made by me, it goes through a fairly lengthy process.
When I am making a custom smudging feather. I work with the person to get the feather combination, to the colours of leather and beads they want.
I also learn a little about them and where they are on their journey. The rest of my creation I follow my intuition to complete their piece.
Each piece is unique and hand crafted with the great care.
Before I start anything I smudge my work space.
The rest starts with my intention, "to create something with love". I honour everything from the feathers and wood I use. All the way to when I am planting and then harvesting the plants for making smudge sticks.
Everything is done with the greater care, I honour the earth when I weeding around the plants, I honour the birds sacrifice, I honour the person requesting their smudging feather. I hold this intention for every single feather made.
Then I select each feather and leather being guided by my intuition along the way. Each piece of wood I use to strengthen the feather is carefully cut, shaped and sanded before having the feathers attached to them and covered in leather.
The best way I have found to attach the feathers to the wood is hot glue, it works great. Although more traditionally it would have been candle wax or tree sap. I find the hot glue holds up a lot better and thus has your piece last for years.
Each piece is finished off with it's unique finish, whether it is beading or some type of lacing.
Once the masterpiece is completed I draw a medicine card for you. Again I hold my intention and draw the card for the person highest good. Some times I am guided to get them to hold a question the have in their intention so again I can draw the best card for them.
Also with the purchase of the feather you get a small amount of sage to smudge with, this is my own home grown sage.
Enjoy your piece, like many others have.
What is Smudging?
"Smudging" is the common name given to a powerful cleansing technique from the Native American tradition; however, the burning of herbs for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is a common practice among many religious, healing, and spiritual traditions.
It is a ceremonial way to cleanse a person, place or an object of negative energies or influences. It is also an effective method for energizing or blessing a person, place or object.
Smudging can be useful when you're feeling depressed, angry, resentful, unwell or after you have had an argument. It is common to smudge yourself, the space and all the guests or participants before a ritual, ceremony or celebration. You can smudge your home or work space as part of a general spiritual housecleaning. You can cleanse crystals or other objects of any negative or lingering energy also.
There are many ways to smudge and a variety of different herbs may be used Sage is probably the most popular herb for smudging, followed by Sweet Grass.
How to Smudge Any action undertaken with intention and belief can become a potent ritual. Consider your intention before you smudge and hold it clearly in your mind. Smudging should be done with care, with reverence and in an attitude of love.
A candle flame is recommended to light the smudge stick. Once the stick is alight with flame, blow it out so that the smudge stick is smoldering, not burning. If you're using loose leaves, a candle is still recommended. Again, you want to blow out the flame so the sage doesn't burn away too rapidly.
Smudging Yourself or Another Fan the swirls of smoke around your body from head to toe with your hands or a smudging feather. Focus on areas where you feel there are blockages or where there has been or is physical, emotional, or spiritual pain. Imagine the smoke lifting away all the negative thoughts, emotions and energies that have attached themselves to you. You may also want to speak an intention or a suggestion for the smudging as you do it.
Smudging a Room or Space Light the smudge stick, let is smolder and walk about the perimeter, giving special attention to the corners and the places behind doors. You can also fan the smoke throughout the room with a smudging feather. You should state a prayer of gratitude for the cleansing and keep in mind your intention of removing any negatively inclined energy. When inside and smudging with sage open doors and windows, (this is very important) this is to help the negative energy get out. Note when burning sage do not put it out, let it smolder out on it’s own. After the sage, you can then burn sweet grass, which brings in positive energy, the windows and doors may be closed for this and you can put it out whenever you want.
