    ~ Terracotta Pottery History ~

    Various Terracotta Pottery

Terracotta or ‘baked earth’ includes the types of earthenware that are either unglazed clay based pottery or are glazed ceramics.

The fired body in terracotta pottery must essentially be porous.

Terracotta is used for making water pots, pipes, statues, surface embellishments for buildings.

Terracotta can be characterized by its natural reddish brown color that might vary in shade from region to region.

Terracotta is also described as being extremely plastic because it can be easily morphed or sculpted.

When heated around 1000°F to 2000°F this type of clay form hardens and can be then heated in pits or kilns.

The properties of terracotta, its color, plasticity and hardness come from the iron content in clay.

Surface burnishing reduces the porosity of terracotta articles and they become suitable for use as garden pots, water pitchers, pipes, pots and cookwares.

For suitability as use as kitchenware it is must that the terracotta pottery has good surface and is uncracked during firing process.

If uncracked the terracotta pots would ring when lightly struck.

Many artisans are practicing terracotta pottery as art and it has become one of the most highly demanded forms of clay art today.

Many artists also manufacture terracotta pottery by using clay from older and used pots known as grog.

For over 800 years, the Chorotega Indians have been producing organic coil built pottery throughout Central America.

This artistic tradition has been passed down, generation to generation, and is one of the remaining indigenous crafts still being practiced in Costa Rica.
